How Harmony Yoga & Music came to be...
I’ve been surrounded by music all my life, and love teaching children about the healing power of yoga.
That’s what inspired me to start my own business, Harmony Yoga & Music Studio, and it’s why I’m so excited to work with curious, passionate and inquisitive kids (and their families!) from all across Niagara.
Growing up in Niagara Falls, I had a childhood full of exploration, wonder and self-discovery. I’m lucky to have a mother who encouraged countless hours of free and independent play, which forced me to be creative and find my true passions and desires early in life.
As a proud Bajan, I’m known for my laid-back “island” mentality, which I bring to the studio. I want people (especially children) to feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible when learning about music and movement, because it’s important for kids to be able to let go of any inhibitions, insecurities or shyness and express themselves through music.
A life spent learning and teaching
My story starts more than a decade ago, when I began taking music lessons at 14 after seeing John Mayer perform in concert. I soon became addicted to playing, and had such a passion for guitar that I paid for the lessons myself and rode my bike to class with my instrument on my back. I spent my high school years releasing my first album and playing gigs around Niagara (both acoustically and with the Carly Manley Band).
At 16, I began teaching at The Niagara Institute of Music, where I discovered my love for teaching and inspiring young minds. For close to half my life, I’ve traveled internationally (including to Italy and Barbados) to perform and teach others who love music just as much as I do.
A few years later, I started taking hot yoga classes at Yoga By Sarah here in St. Catharines. By the spring of 2014, I’d completed my yoga teacher training and began to explore how I could use it to help others. I soon found that I could combine music and yoga to offer my young students a chance to learn how to harness and positively channel their energy into creative pursuits, like playing instruments and singing.
For many years, I’d dreamed of starting my own studio and with my husband Drew’s help and encouragement, Harmony Yoga & Music became reality. We worked day and night to transform a rundown house on Glendale Avenue into a bright, welcoming space with a reception area, music rooms and dark wood floors bathed in natural light that enters through new windows.
I was finally able to use my passion for working with young children to offer a unique list of programs featuring music lessons and yoga classes for kids ranging from pre-school to teenagers.
Today, I’m doing what I love.
I get to work with a team of people who love their jobs and believe wholeheartedly in what we do. We truly care about everyone who walks through our door. We love coming into work every day because we learn from our students as much as they learn from us; we’re always discovering how innately creative and eager to learn kids are. We help them discover and nurture their inherent talents and interests.
It’s well known that the experiences our children have before the age of five shape their identities, and set the path they’ll take for the rest of their lives. That’s why we work with kids – by helping them discover and nurture their inherent talents and interests, we play a small part in molding these tiny human beings into the individuals they’re meant to be.
We’d love to meet you and your family and discuss which of our programs would fit your needs.
